The neverending deck
Posted on July 21st, 2008 in Daily Life |
What week is it now? Six? Yeah, that seems about right. How many more weeks? I’ll be conservative and say three. I’m learning the truth behind tip #2. So far 99% of the decking is down and 80% of the posts for the railing are up. We still need to add in the part of the deck that is by the door, some stairs, the horizontal pieces of the railing, and then the 9,000 or so vertical pieces to help retarded children avoid getting their heads caught when they start to do retarded things. On a good note, the railing will be made of 2 x 6 and therefore ample enough to hold any beer.
A little side note before I get down to bidnee. Turns out that the lovely Miss Jennifer, all the way up in AssCrack Massachusetts, has the same saw as me. How cool! My dad said that, not only are we the only two female college friends to have saws, we are definitely the only two cool enough to have the same saw.
And yet, Miss Jennifer has not sent in the pictures of us from her wedding to the Smith Quarterly. It’s not like I live for that….
Moving on.
As you can see from the image below, I’ve lugged alot more wood onto the deck and my dad’s handy dandy contraption for cutting long pieces remains intact. You can also see, barely, the railing posts for this portion of the deck.
So, 99% of decking completed. Not all screwed in, but down and held in place. I just went and screwed down some more slats but gave up when the sweat got in my eyes.
Just missing this little bit:
Despite all of the construction and my crazy schedule, I have had time to actually sit on the deck. I sent some work emails with the tagline “Sent from my wireless deck”. The deck’s not gorgeous yet, but it will be. It’s certainly relaxing, which is the prime reason it exists.
I will say that this door, and the one for the shed, are probably next on the hist parade. Just a little unsightly.
To class up the deck without doing much work, I plan to paint the big vertical posts and the horizontal railing pieces white. The decking and vertical slats for the railing will remain au naturale. It looks purposeful even if it’s sheer laziness.
On another note, the front yard is still doing well.
Spoiler alert: this view will be changing in a few weeks. I’ll post pictures. No hints.

Pictures of the wedding? Oh, I HAVE pictures. It begs the question for Jbot. Suspenders - yay or nay? :)
I’d be afraid to submit any of them to the Smith Quarterly. “Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. Especially one from Smith.”
