Clarinets

There’s something about clarinets in a song that automatically inspire thoughts of a movie soundtrack. I’d say the most immediate visions that come to mind are images from “Fried Green Tomatoes”–one of my favorite movies.
Right now I am listening to “Half Acre” by Hem, which has a good deal of clarinets and other dreamy sounds. You may recognize it from the most recent Liberty Mutual commercial.
I am fairly certain that this song will add an air of significance to anything you happen to be doing while it is on.
“I am holding half an acre
Torn from the map of Michigan
And folded in this scrap of paper
Is the land I grew in
Think of every town you’ve lived in
Every room you lay your head
And what is it that you remember
Do you carry every sadness with you
Every hour your heart was broken
Every night the fear and darkness
Lay down with you
A man is walking on the highway
A woman stares out at the sea
And light is only now just breaking
So we carry every sadness with us
Every hour our hearts were broken
Every night the fear and darkness
Lay down with us
But I am holding half an acre
Torn from the map of Michigan
I am carrying this scrap of paper
That can crack the darkest sky wide open
Every burden taken from me
Every night my heart unfolding
My home “

[...] In both cases, the band behind the song is Hem. When the first Liberty Mutual commercial came out, I was hooked. The song is “Half Acre” off of their “Rabbit Songs” album. I bought it 188 songs ago and I’m still drawn to it in quiet moments. I originally gushed about the song in a post from June 20th, 2006. [...]
